MERU NATIONAL PARK
Meru National Park is a protected area located in eastern Kenya, covering an area of approximately 870 square kilometers (340 square miles). It is situated in the eastern part of the country, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) from Nairobi, the capital city. Meru National Park is known for its diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife, and its association with the famous conservationists Joy and George Adamson. The park is named after the Meru people, an ethnic group that inhabits the region surrounding the park. It was established in 1968 and gained international attention through Joy Adamson's book and subsequent film "Born Free," which depicted her experiences rehabilitating a lioness named Elsa and releasing her into the wild within the park. Meru National Park features a variety of ecosystems, including dense riverine forests, acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and numerous waterways. The park is traversed by several rivers, most notably the Tana River, which forms its southern boundary. This diverse habitat supports a rich diversity of wildlife. The park is home to an array of wildlife species, including elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos, zebras, giraffes, and numerous antelope species. It is also renowned for its healthy population of rhinoceros, both black and white. Meru National Park is considered one of the best places in Kenya to spot rare and endangered species such as Grevy's zebras and reticulated giraffes.
